Oxinium™
A longer-lasting alternative for hip and knee replacement
As a person suffering from osteoarthritis or another form of degenerative joint disease, there is a strong possibility that one day you may need knee or hip replacement surgery. Prior to your treatment , you'll have many questions for your orthopaedic surgeon:
- Will the pain go away after surgery?
- How much movement will I get back?
- Will I be able to resume my normal activities?
- How long will It take me to recover?
- How long will the implant last? ... and dozens more questions!
But a question that you probably are not thinking about asking is what kind of implant device you will be receiving. What is it made of, and why is your surgeon using a particular kind of device? Not all implant devices are made of the same material. Due to significant advancements in technology, metallurgy and process, there now is a revolutionary new material for implant devices that, quite literally, is " As Strong As An Ox".
Oxinium™ (oxidized zirconium is the name of the material) from Smith & Nephew is now being used in hip and knee replacements. Because of its superior hardness, smoothness and resistance to scratching and abrasion, you can expect an Oxinium™ joint replacement to be longer -lasting, which should allow you to resume normal activities with less fear of undergoing repeat revision surgery.
